needs a jack

When I bought my '64 F-100 a few weeks ago, it did not come with a jack or a tire iron. Did this truck come with a bumper jack, or what? Any ideas where I might find a replacement? It has a custom rear bumper, so I'm not sure how a bumper jack would even work. Would it even work to use a modern scissors jack?

I just use a 4 way and a small floor jack and position it under the axel to change tires/flats. The floor jack has 4 wheels and is easy to position. Bottle jacks work fine, but I find this one to be easier since it rolls on four wheels and sits very low to the ground. I remember having trouble getting some of the bottle jacks under the axel when you have a flat since the axel can be so low.

I would definately stay away from a scissor jack unless that's all you have in a emergency situation. was there an area under hood for mounting it? I would get a bottle jack to use on the road if necessary other than that a floor jack would be best bet. I'm sure if you look at your local wrecking yard you can find the jack. As for the bumper style jack on a custom bumper I doubt it will work. good luck.

Staying low for now

Doc, The truck would have come with a screw type bottle jack. Looks like a hydrolic jack except you screw it rather than pump it. A sissor or small floor jack both will work well lifting from under the axle.

The screw jack was the same from 50 thru the late 80's. You take one from anf F-series truck or even a 83 or later Ranger pickup. The tire iron is the same as any Ford car up until 1980. Any junkyard will have these items. If you don't have the folding handle to crank the jack up and down, They're still available new from Ford. This handle was also used in the C series cab overs up until 1992.

I had a rusted scissor jack in my truck, I used it once and vowed to get something better. I got a floor jack which came with 2 jacks stands for $30 at Kragen. It is still small enough to fit beneath the seats.

Thanks for the help

Thank you for the helpful suggestions. I will talk this over with my son, who is buying the truck from me, and see what he wants to do. Since he is planning to get a hydraulic rolling floor jack anyway, I'll bet he would prefer that to trying to use an old screw jack, even if it is authentic.
