93 Ford Escort. 1.9 stick. More miles than God had imagined. I LOVE this car.
Idle has been oscillating for some time. It's steadily getting worse. Now I'm to the point that the car stalls out at red lights.
New plugs, new wires, new air filter, new pcv valve, new fuel filter. Mass Air sensor, Throttle Position Sensor are good.
Idle drops to 500 and usually recovers...bounces back up to about 1200, then drops again. Will repeatedly vary up and down until the spikes get great enough (low enough?) for the engine to die.
Starts right back up. Really annoying. Running out of ideas.
First two things I would check are...
1. TPS - Throttle Position Sensor
2. IAC - Idle Air Control Sensor
Go to http://www.autozone.com
They have an on-line shop manual for your car. It may answer your questions
On the left, click on " Vehicle Repair Guides ". then enter your vehicle info.
On vehicles with many miles it is usually the IAC because it and the manifold are caked with black junk. One thing you might consider is buying a IAC and then seafoaming the intake. Then change the IAC if need be. In the Ranger forum, I believe someone posted a detailed message about cleaning one.
Thanks both. 94van...incredible photo. Thank you. Took IAC apart, carbon was present, but not really bad...seemed to be mostly falling apart. 38 dollars later, it idles fine.

Thanks again
Glad you found the problem, happy motoring!
Oh, that photo is from the Auto Zone on line shop manual.
