With the key out, I have 12V on both sides of my soleniod as well as at the same post where the ignition switch signal comes from. Which I thought was strange. I took the lead that goes directly to the starter off the soleniod, and put it on the battery and nothing. I would have thought the truck would start. Took starter off, had it checked, it is fine. Replaced soleniod, same symptoms with 12V across three posts. Battery checks out. Had it checked with the starter. Any thoughts? Could my battery have shorted? Had it checked two weeks ago and it checked out fine. Did have a fuel pump put in a few days ago, but seems to me that is unrelated. Maybe the cable from the soleniod to the starter?
It's easy to forget about a ground. You can have 12 volts everywhere, but nothing will work unless the current can flow back to the battery negative.
You have had the battery out, so I will assume the battery - connection is ok. I would look at the other end of the negative cable where it bolts to the engine block.
If you find the large negative cable was bad, you might want to check out some of the smaller ground straps from the engine block to the firewall and any small ground wires from the battery - to the sheetmetal. Sometimes when the large - wire goes bad, the starter will try to ground through the smaller ground wires, and this will burn them in two. Then you start having other small elect problems since these ground the sheetmetal to the engine block. The engine and tranny are mounted in rubber.
