'70 disk brake conversion?

My uncle just picked up a cherry 1970 2wd half ton. It's absolutely perfect but has the stock manual drum setup. My question is, can you just retrofit a disc setup from a newer truck? I deal mostly in 4wd but I was under the impression that they used the same TTB setup for all the 2wd's in the 70's, so I'm hoping we could just use later components. If not, does anyone know if there's an aftermarket kit for this? I did a C**vy disc conversion on my '66 Bronco so I'm pretty familiar with what's involved in these swaps, just need a little help with 2wd knowledge. Thanks in advance.

You betcha you can upgrade the system. Find a 74-79 1/2 ton donor and grab the I-beams, booster, master cylinder (for core), prop. valve, lines & brackets, and the brake light switch off the pedal. If you need to you can grab the power steering as well. You just will need to find one with the same engine family and tranny, for the pump brackets & pullies, and the streering column.

Dang nice upgrade for an otherwise great truck.

Any further questions post them or you can email me. :-)

Thanks much for the info. I understand everything you mentioned, just wanted to clarify why the I Beams have to be switched. I'm guessing it's because the spindle is different for rotors vs. drums but I just wanted to check.

460, I have a 79 with every part you are looking for plus the power steering that i would like to get rid of cheap, please let me know if you are interested at STIHL044@AOL.COM before it all goes to the scrap yard.

No Sir, that's not it at all, it's because you can change out the whole I-beam with a lot less energy than you cna change out the hubs.

If you don't take Jeff up on his offer, just check your donor by pulling on the tires for king pin tightness. If you don't know what to look for just stop by your neighborhood tire store and the alignment tech will gladly show you.
