HELP – electrical troubles
I need some help.
I have a 2004 Ford F-150 that I am having problems with.
I just bought it used with 31,000 miles. The truck did not have the tow package, but did have a flat 4 prong trailer wiring.
I need to pull a trailer with electric brakes. I bought a Ford wire harness that plugs into the truck harness and has the round 7 plug and the flat 4. I did put an extra relay in (the guy at the hitch place sold it to me) that went into relay R05 – Trailer Tow Battery Charge. I have a boat battery in the trailer to power the lights and alarm. This also is now my electric brake break-away battery.
I hooked up my enclosed car trailer and the trailer lights wouldn’t work except for one back light. I had problems with the lights before; the harness gets caught in the rear door and pinches the wires causing a short. But this time the truck lights also don’t work in the rear of the truck. I unhooked the trailer and checked all the fuses in the truck and nothing is blown. The turn signals will blink at the dash, but not outside. And if you hit the brakes, then they go out. When you put the turn signals on, the back up light comes on, but it won’t come on in reverse. The bulbs light up very slightly when the headlights are on.

What could be going on? I have not pulled the bulbs to see if they blew, but I would thin that some of the fuses would pop before the bulbs. I also have not unhooked the new wire harness from the truck.

Anyone have any ideas?? I am very mechanical, but I hate electrical problems.

Thanks,

How old is the trailer? I would check the bulbs and see if they are blown. If you are unsure of how old they are then maybe just change them. I have seen filaments break and touch other parts and cause a mess of problems. Check your grounds. Have you hooked the trailer up to another vehicle to see if the lights work on that? Might be something to do.
