I am in the market for a new truck and have been looking for a F250 or 350. I would love the diesel but I judt dont think that I am gonna find one in my price range (00 or newer, less then 100k, $21000 or less, extended or crew cab). I drove a V-10 crew today and just cant live with the 8-10mpg it was getting (mileage was for the first 1/2 the tank). How does the 5.4 perform in the 350 platform? The truck would be a daily driver with once a month towing in the summer. Trips from 3 to 7 hours pulling a 26 foot enclosed Haulmark trailer with 4 race bikes (350lbs each), misc racing equip , and four people in the cab (800lbs). I have been using my Chevy 1500 with the 5.3 so far and the enginge has been doing fine, I just think the suspension has been pretty stressted (lots of tounge weight). Do you think I should consider the 5.4 F350 or should I start looking at a 7.3 with 100+ and just buy the additional warranty??
Thanks in advance,
Chris
Ps. Sorry for the grammar/spelling errors, been a long night.
rhoadc-welcome to the site. first off, i have no experience with a 5.4, but do have experience with a 6.8 v10 and a 7.3psd. in your situation i would look closer to a diesel then the 5.4. i pull a snowmobile trailer-approx 4500lbs with bout 2500lbs of sleds+misc parts and 4-5 people...so lookin at around 8-9k lbs of extra weight, and my diesel doesnt even blink an eye when it comes to pulling that trailer. i get around 9-10mpg with overdrive off pulling the big trailer and thats in the winter. now i bought an 02 f350 7.3 psd cc lariat for 22k, and it had 98k miles on it. now there are a few scratches and one small dent above right rear fender but nothing major, just some minor blemishes. i would say just to keep ur eyes peeled for a diesel-might not be showroom condition but if its got the 7.3 in it then i dont think u have to worry bout reliability. a site i use when i buy trucks is www.autotrader.com it seems to work pretty slick and u can search ur general location so u dont have to travel very far to look at trucks
I had a 2000 with the 5.4 and the mileage was not appreciatively better than in the V10. My brother in law has a V10 and stated he gets very good considering (12 around average). I have heard of some doing better and some worse.
I have the 6.0 diesel now (the 5.4 did not have the tow capacity that I needed) and the mileage is decent with 16-17 with a mix drive. The gerat t hing about it is that it can tow anything. Although that is what I hear about the v10 as well.
