Thanks to all who responded to my posts about my tranny getting hot it is now working much better after replacing the bypass valve. It amazes me that the original owner took it in to Ford under warranty for it getting hot and they found nothing wrong!.
I was having an issue that my tranny ran hot at 180 deg empty and 210-215 loaded and with and auxillary (second) cooler in series it would run hotter. Flow seemed to be okay through both but went with the advice of several people here and changed the bypass valve anyway and it seems to be the fix. The bypass valve bypasses the cooler to get the tranny up to temp when it is cold and the valve must have been stuck open to some extent so the all the fluid wasn't going through the cooler.
My tranny has been running around the 180 temp range when empty. It's been 97-105 degrees air temp here, but that still seems a little hot for tranny when not towing. Where is the bypass valve located? I think I may check it out to see if it's sticking open also. Thanks
Yes sir Lushman that is the unit I replaced it with.
RedDragon, the bypass valve is on the passengers side of the tranny just above the pan. It connects the sending fluid line (front of tranny) to the return line (rear of tranny). Hope this helps.
