Exclamation No speedometer/odometer - rough shifting

I have read so many posts on this topic and want to make sure I am on the right track...

I have a 1997 E350 SuperDuty Van. Yesterday I recharged the A/C. My van was running fine before that. I got in the van to take it around the block to feel the cold A/C and the speedometer was not working and it felt like the torque converter kept locking and unlocking. I would press on the gas and it would go and shift funny and then the engine would rev way up and would not go anymore until I let up on the gas.

I changed out the ABS/VSS and still no speedo and REALLY hard shifts.

Is the next logical step to replace the instrument panel/PSOM?

Thank you!
Jeff

One thing to check first...

Assuming your E350 is similar on the AC system as my 94 F250...

Whenever I work on the passenger side of the engine, I almost always knock one or more of the vacuum lines off of the AC housing that is against the passennger side fire wall. This will sometimes cause the engine to lose cruise, set codes, run like heck etc. Depends on which hose and how completely disconnected it is I guess.

There are I think two sets of hoses going to the AC air handler(?) against the firewall. They are I think White and red vinyl type hoses that terminate in a black rubber connector that plugs into the AC. The plugs can easily pull loose while you are fiddling around down there. They don't always look like they are loose, so you should pull them off and plug them back in. I have had this problem more times than I like to say, but at least this fix is easy, fast and free. Check all those plastic and rubber vacuum lines just to be safe.

Since you were messing with the AC, I bet you dislodged one of the vacuum lines, and this would cause some or all of the problems you are seeing. Not sure why, but it does.

One other possibility but usually not related to messing with the AC is the speed sensor. But then you already changed that.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
