Question differences in v10s

What's going on guys.....looking for a new heavy duty truck and saw that there are two versions of the v10. Pre 05 and 05 up. Has anyone driven both motors that can tell the difference in power between the two? I want to get a new motor but don't see the reason buying a 05+ and paying 28k up while i can find a low mileage 02 for around 23k and below. Any opinions would be appreciated!

p.s. - btw i'm looking at 4wd

There are actually 3 versions, not 2... the early superduty v-10's had 275hp, I think they made
the switch to the improved motor in 2001 with 315-ish hp. The 05+ models have the 3v 367hp motor.

I've driven a 99 V-10 with 3.73's and my current 06 V-10 with the 4.10's. No comparison, the
06 is a rocket next to the 99. If you are doing any hauling, the 05+ V-10's with 4.10's and
the torqueshift are a dynamite combo....

Wow, really? I thought my '99 V10 was a rocket compared to my '91 351W... That much difference? Should I test drive a newer one or will my wallet be unduly threatened?

Your wallet will be threatened, but maybe not initially. My first reaction to my 06 was
damn, I thought everyone said these had so much power? I think they are detuned while
they are breaking in... somewhere around the 150 hour mark, the motor really wakes up.
The steering was also very stiff when I first got mine but it's also loosened up a bit.
After taking my 24' enclosed trailer out for 500 miles last week, I love this truck!

Model-year 2000 got the updated V10 - see the FAQ at the top of the forum

I'll say this... I had a 1974 Highboy that I put a worked 390 into, 11:1 compression, big cam, 4bbl, headers, ported heads, CJ exhaust valves, the works. I had someone desktop-dyno it and it was good for MAYBE 430 ft/lbs of torque. That's "gross".

My 2001 V10 is rated 425ft/lbs of torque. That's "net" meaning with all the accessories sucking up 80 ft/lbs of torque or so.

The V10 in a much heavier truck (almost 1500 lbs or so) with about the same effective gearing is faster than the Highboy was.

It can't spin the tires as easy, but that's because it's an automatic with a lot more weight over the tires.

I think all the V10s are a pretty capable engine. No doubt the 3 valve is boss hog but even the 99 275 horse can move a trailer real well if it has 4.30 gears. The 3 valve with 4.10s and T/S trans, like Tfalk says, is real sweet. Good luck in finding the right V10 for you .

And if anything, the early pre-'00 V10 suffers more from the tranny not up-shifting at the right times.

Am I correct in thinking that as the V10 has evolved, all it's done is extend the torque curve further out, while increasing slightly overall?

For all the lack of marketing of the platform, what the heck is Ford bothering working on this thing for? Is there a foreign market or something we're missing?

The 3-valve is only available in the F-series (F53 now too?) ...

WHEN is Ford going to push the V10 as a hemi-beater? They just ignore it.

Or do they think (correctly) that the V10 is such a heavy-duty motor that it's out of the realm of comparison with other gassers?

Like the FT engines compared to the FE's.

I don't know...

owned a 2002 and now a 2005. the engine modifications plus the stearing arm/suspension changes are enough in the '05 to NOT WANT an earlier model if you can afford it. Simple test, if this truck will be your "around town" driver, take a pre-'05 to walmart and try parking it. Then take a '05 onward to walmart and park it. I know this sounds stupid, but this is HUGE and this difference is just the beginning of the major differences in the years.

By the way, you can get a low mileage '05 V10 crewcab if you search for between $24-27k right now because of gas prices, atleast in my area you can.

Everyone has covered the engine question but towandcamp hit on an often overlooked aspect- ride & handling of an '05+ are much improved over the previous models. The only thing I'd like to add is that the torqshift tranny is miles ahead of the older E4OD-based models before it.

As an FYI, I've owned a '00 F250, '01 F350 (SRW), '02 F250 and now an '05 F250.

Krew,

Just confused what you mean by Ford pushing the V10 as a "hemi-beater"?

Most of the Ram HD 5.7L Hemi guys I've spoke to acknowledge that any of the V10s blow the 5.7 hemi out of the water as a truck engine. Some say they are even up for speed unloaded but with a trailer attached or any kind of weight in the bed the 6.8L, not suprisingly, walks away easily from the "Hemi" with a trailer in tow. Especially on interstate hills.

What I'm trying to say is I think that most 3/4 & 1 ton truck owners know the capabilities of the V10. Even the Ram and GM nuts I know locally that hate Ford trucks respect the engine, if not the truck as a whole.

The V10's reputation speaks for it self. It's taken a few years!

I was commenting on the V10 alone. The guys are right about the handling and the steering. My 05 CC LB feels smaller around town than my 00 and 04 CC SBs ever did.
Yesterday I was driving a Chev CC LB at work and that thing takes way more room to turn than my big Ford.

In 05, the 3valving of the V10, the torqueshift, and the 4x4 supertight steering, and the big GVWR increase, blew the competition and the earlier Superduties right out of the water.

Not what I needed to read. I am happy with my '99. Lead me not into temptation. Actually, I don't think I can justify the expense of upgrading at this point so my safest approach is to not drive an '05-up.

As you can tell by my user name my other toy is a highly modified 5.0 HO, untill I bought my '02 SC V-10, I really thought I knew what fun to drive was, there's no comparison, the V10 rules! I'd probably enjoy driving any year V10! however parking can sometimes be a challange. Buy it, You'll love it!"Let Them Ponies Run!"
