Are you talking internal or external?

Any idea on how many miles are on the tranny you picked up? If the miles are not too high you could just clean it up and replace the external seals, gaskets and filter. It's always good to drop the tranny pan and check the fluid condition and see what ever else you find in the pan to determine if the tranny maybe good or not. I am currently rebuilding my 77 C4 tranny that had 113K on it and I am glad I did, since I found many worn and broken parts in it during the process. Good luck.

Well since the tranny attaches to a transfer case and the extension housing was missing, it was exposed to weather and dirt. The previous oil was very burnt looking and some foreign things in it.

I am not to sure how many miles were previously on it.

About how much mechanical experience do you think is needed for self-rebuilding, or take it to some transmission specialists?

Sorry for the long wait, I forgot about this post.

To decide whether you are up to a transmission rebuild, I would pick up a transmission rebuild manual and read through it to determine if your up to the task. I have been doing my own auto mechanic work for almost thirty years and I have always been apprehensive about rebuilding an automatic transmission. I am currently in the process of rebuilding my C4 3 speed automatic transmission, which will be my first total transmission rebuild. The key is to clean the tranny thoughly before you start and carefully take the tranny apart and lay all the parts out in the order that they came off, so that you will remember how to put it back together. Read the manual to determine if you will need any special tools for the job. Haynes manuals will sometimes show alternate tools that will do the same job. Good luck.
