How Tuners Work

So we seem to have endless amounts of posts here that talk about which tuner is the best and whatnot. But I can't say I've ever seen a post discussing how they actually work. Anybody have some insight on this topic? Being new to diesels for the past few months I'm still curious how these things manage to get more HP and better fuel mileage at the same time by changing how the computer regulates the engine; you just don't see that in gassers. What aspects of the engine do tuners typically change to get more power? I've been considering one (BullyDog) for better fuel mileage but want to know what exactally it is doing to my engine/transmission before I decide what to do. I'm sure alot of people here could benifit from knowing what exactally they are doing to their trucks when they install a tuner. Thanks guys.

Welcome to FTE Hokie. You have quite the question, searching the forums will leave you with hours of reading. In short you have 2 devices. In-Line devices that modify a signal sent from the computer and flash tuners. Gas engines benefit from tuning and diesels produce a higher result.

I'm sure one of our residents will drop by with the technical information your wanting to know. We have a people here that have worked in the tuning industry that are regular FTE members.
