I have a 96 F350 and my pedal is going to the floor. The truck will finally stop when it gets to the floor. Does anyone know how I can figure out if it is a bad brake booster or a bad master cylinder? There aren't any leaks anywhere but I don't want to replace both if there is a way to test them. I just put a 3,000 tranny and transfer case in, I'm running a little low on spare cash! Thanks
Alright. We did notice the seal under the master cylinder cap was ripped and I was wondering if that could have let air in. We fixed the cap and I was wondering if we should bleed them. Thanks!
Are the brakes better now that you have replaced the seal? If the pedal goes to the floor there may be is an external leak and fluid should be dropping in the master cylinder. If that were the case I am sure you would have found the leak. If the seals are leaking internally in the master cylinder you can pump the brake several times real quick and the pedal will come up to the normal height which may point you in the direction of the master cylinder. If the fluid got real low in the reservoir almost empty I'm pretty sure you could air in the system from there. I'm driving an 88 f-150 so I am not sure if the systems are the same.Is there a lot left on the brake pads and shoes?
Try this: step on the pedal and hold your foot there. Once the brakes engage, if it slowly sinks to the floor, it's the master cylinder. If it's just very low, but doesn't sink when you hold your foot on it, the rear shoes need to be adjusted.
Don't worry about the booster - that's not your problem.
