Can anyone tell me what was the "EXPLORER" in 1970? I have found one for $500 but it is currently a boom truck at a local feed store. The body is in great shape, has a 360,auto,a/c,ps,pdb, but i have never seen an "EXPLORER" in the 67-72 body style.
The Explorer package is just a trim package only nothing more. You can get the same truck with or without. As for the first year that it was introduced, I will have to defer to another member more up on them.
I have a 1971 Explorer. To the best of my knowledge, the package was available first in 1968 and continued each year until 1990 when the name was transferred to the new 1991 Bronco II replacement.
It was offered late in each model year and generally had some variation on special colors, seat and door trim, striping, box rails, bumper guards, etc. at a value price. My particular one was an Explorer "C" which was a Custom series which actually deleted some items such as the chrome front bumper and door courtesy switches but added an upgraded seat and door panel and bright drip molding and had colors not available without the package.
I believe 1968 was the first year the "Explorer Special" package was offered and the only badging was on the glove box (said "Explorer") until 1972 when it was on the back of each side of the bed. Just so happens I own a 1972 F250 "Explorer" that I'm restoring. The Explorer packages were designed to spur sales.
