The "deal" with the unicab 4x4 as I understand it is this:
Ford originally intented to have all their styleside line for '61 be the stylish Unicab model. They experimented with the 4x4 version and found that with the frame setup they wanted to use, (left over from the original factory 4x4's they began making in 1959), was so flexible it would crack the unicab behind the windows and at the door frame from twisting. So they scrapped the idea.
But rumors fly that a few got out for public consumption in 1961, before Ford realized their flaws.. Now FordboyPete and others who worked for Ford at the time will tell you that you can never say never with Ford. They made all kinds of special runs and insider deals, 390's in trucks for Ford execs, that were in trucks that never had 390s from the factory officially, 427s, etc, etc.
So if Henry Ford II's buddy Zeke, who liked Unis and had a fleet of a dozen 4x4's for taking people fly fishing, as an example, wanted a special order and he fed Henry enough bourbon, voila! a fleet of uni 4x4's would be on his doorstep a few months later. So, it COULD have happened. But did it?
Who killed Marilyn Monroe? was there a lone gunman in the grassy knoll in Texas? and were there 4x4 unis? I think J Edgar Hoover took all those answers to his grave
OK. iv had many early 60'sford trucks both 4x4 and 2x4 but mostly along the lines of work trucks ( nothing to special other than the fact that they were fords) . i sold my last 65 4x4 f250 to an employ 2 years ago and have bee kicking myself over it for,oh i dont know ...abought 2 years. but it was one of the rustiest trucks id ever seen .but also the best truck id ever owend( and ive had just south of a dozen) but ive never gotten into the histories or documentation of these wonders of the automotive industiy. and ive only seen the unis, never had one .(and ive seen only 1 4x4 before this one).so when i heard about this one i jumped on it (he who hesetates is lost, snooze you loose, dont wiz on the electric fence...etc) so i didnt want to waste time w/ research untill i had the truck firmly in my grasp (its being delivered sometime today) and frankly if it is a real uni 4x4 ill have to start my search all over again because i want something to romp on and that would be very hard to do to someting as rare as this '62' . so i guess all this rambling is just to say that i know next to nothing about the uni and will be looking forward to hearing any pearls of wisdom and nuggets of information or lumps of critisism or buckets of scorn you might want to hurl my way. sorry about be'n so windy its just the way i am (to the udder dismay of my wife)

ps any good publications would be helpful too
A place to start is at the 2 Vin stampings on the frame rails.
Second place is to look at the position and part nukmber of the transfer case.
The Prefix should not be a later part number than C2T........The Case should also be A divorced case unit single speed. with a intermediate propeller shaft.
The front axle should be a closed knuckel type and be a DANA that will have a date of birth cast or stamped into it on the passenger side of the housing.
The rear wont count as it should have been there to begin with.
Oh and an original 62 will have all fine thread hardware.......
thanx 4 the info .when it shows up ill begin my research after a few hours with the pressure washer, putty knife ,wire wheel ...etc...i should have more stuff to say .hopefully along the lines of "whoopieee" "yahooo""yeehawww"and then ill have to get that henry ford musiem phone # from ringo. but you know how this stuff goes its not too good to get your hopes up.but its been my experiance that if you actively search for something like this youll only find it by accident.and since i wasnt even really looking for a uni much less a 4x4 then well ........

3 acres of fords 12 to go
This is a good site for overall Ford truck knowledge, I come here because my Ford trucks run from 1927-1972
specifically for the 61-66's there's also www.ford-trucks.com al lot of our members here are also there
Of all the 61-66 4x4 long beds, the 1961 is probably the most unusual. Which bed do you have? The 57-60 style, the 8 foot flare side or possibly the long disputed unibody 4x4. It has been my understanding that no 1961 longbeds were of the 57-60 style and that all were flare sides. Let us know.
I don't have a uni. I'm going to pick it up next week it has been sitting for about 20 years but it doesn't look all that bad. I will try and figure out how to post pictures . And about the bed style it has a white cab and black box and doors so who knows??

i didnt have to much time to mess with the new arrival today but there is a tag on the drivers side door post that says "assigned identification number f26yk805488",wich matches the vin # on the title .then below that it says ,control number u66989. the tag has the washington state seal on it and it says state of washington on the tag. the truck is a green that looks like the green that the wash state forest service uses for their fleet.the granny low 4 speed is like the one in both of my other previous early 60s f250 4x4 but the tag says d2ta7003 ua fl83 22 71 435 so i think its from a '72' but it could have been replaced when they replaced the motor w/ a 390 .the transfer case tag reads "serial 790028 300205-6 24" but thats as far as ive gotten. ill try to get more info tomorrow. i took some pics but im not sure how to post them
Your VIN tag says it's a 66 and came with a 352 so the 390 swap was an easy one F26-F250 4x4 Y-66 352 2bbl 208 HP K-built in Kansas City 805488-consecutive unit number.. built Jan '66
ok its official.the title says 1962 ford g/truck pu
f26yk805486
the frame rail says f26yk805486
is it possable that this was a 62 3/4 ton 4x4 unibody with a special orderd 352
i know it seems like im wishfull thinking here but if theres a chance that this is a real 62 uni 4x4 then i want to make sure so i can restore it instead of work it to death how can i get get documentation

ddub, NO You have a truck that has had a John for an owner. You have a put together truck, that used an existing title. My own 66 F100, title starts F25, my chassis number F10. The NC DMV don't care, I have insurance, a title, and tags. I was told by them that I could get a NC issued number, but figured that would be something else to throw money at, and declined.
