I am getting ready to replace the old 302 in my 78 F-100 with a 351w and I am in the market for a new distributor. I keep coming across HEI replacements and was wondering, does this provide an improvemet from stock, does it work with the stock ignition componenets, and how is the installation? Thanks for any and all help.
If it is like the old Chevy HEI distributors, all you need to have is a + power wire connected to the distributor cap, although I'm not certain if it gets a full 12 volts or a reduced voltage. There is a connector plug at the base of the dizzy that connects to the cap. With the HEI, I think you no longer need your external coil or the duraspark box.
I have a HEI distributor on my son's 86 F150 351W, and it works great. 1 wire (12 volts) hook up and you're ready to go. I scrapped the fuel injection in favor of a 725 road demon carb, and all I did was found a hot wire (with key on) from the stock distributor harness. I didn't buy the DUI brand, I found another brand on ebay for lessthan half the cost of the DUI. Another nice thing is it uses a standard HEI cap and rotor so parts are cheap. The only problem I had was I had to use a spacer for the air cleaner (I'm using a 14" air cleaner) to clear the distributor cap.
