I have lost significant fuel mileage in my 04 f250SD KR. I was getting upwards of 17-19mpg and diesel was flowing like cheap wine. Two weeks ago one of my Jackass employees ran my truck out of fuel and since then my mileage went in the tank....I checked water seperator today and it is black with dirt. Filters were changed at 42,000K and I now have 53K I was gonna change them but realized I have never done it and so I need to know where to purchase the filters, and what size wrench to take off cap under frame rail. Help have a day off tommorow and want to get this done.

Thanks
the socket is an 1 3/8 or 36 mm. I have had to buy filters for mine yet. in the tech folder under 6.0l there is a complete "how to" on changing the fuel filters. I would imagine that you can get them both at any parts house or maybe even Wally World. There is are two filters. At least on my 06 there are I don't think that there is much a difference. Just in case the one under the hood is right next to the oil filter.
go to the international dealer, they are a hell of a lot cheeper. Do a search for the prt# in the 6.0 forum. International uses our filters on there 4.5L diesel (atleast I think thats the engine)
$115 is a tad expensive for even a Ford dealer, but not too much. You can get them for about $49 from dieselfiltersonline (a sponsor of FTE) and even cheaper from your local International service department, if you have one close by.
Absolutely. Go to your local International dealer, and request 1847170C92, fuel filter kit. It's the EXACT same thing as what you'll get from Ford, for about $35. You might want to get 2589259C91 while you're there, it's the replacement drain plug that's got a knurled nut outside the HFCM.
I have found the fuel filters for $34 for the kit, while the oil filter can be 12.
All three take the same size socket. The frame mounted fuel filter can create a mess, but try using aluminum foil or something like that to divert the fuel to the drain pan rather than going down the frame.
You may need to clean out the water separator too. Take the plate off it (4 screws I think) and clean it out good. I cleaned it out with a small screw driver and blew the rest out with air. You'll probably need to replace it's gasket. Comes in a kit from Ford for $30 or so. The 04's had a recall on the filter housings because of some defect in the separator that left it clogged with junk.

If you park the nose slightly downhill and drain the separator befor pulling the cap and filter, then there is no more fuel running down the frame rail.
You could try www.shopdiesel.com. They have good prices on filters, but you have to pay for shipping. Looks like the prices are the same as the International dealer. International probably has better filters than Motorcraft and Raycor.
