I have been reading here about putting in a Pre '71 timing gear and chain in later 460. I wanted to ask from those of you who have done this swap. How did the swap go for you any problems? How was your driveabilty on a daily bases also did your gas mileage pick up? Also along with better torque response did your HP also improve? Thanks.
I did the swap as part of an engine swap, so it was very easy to do.
The truck I took it out of ran fine, but with the new timing set it started more quickly, and ran a lot better.
I cannot really compare mileage because of the difference in the transmission and rear end ratios in the two trucks.
I swapped my timing chain, water pump, radiator, etc. I spent 2 days doing it, wasn't in any rush. No problems other than having some water pump bolts needing to be replaced.
What I did was buy a Cloyes TRUE street roller set for $40 from Jegs. Since my F-250s job is to pull a 10,000# travel trailer we live in, I wanted MAX TORQUE. So I set the the chain up for 4 degrees advanced past TDC. The difference is unreal, The 460 use to grunt on any hill, now it just pulls. I just pulled a 7% grade at 30-35 MPH in second gear ( C-6, 3.55 gears) before 1st gear 20 MPH. I went from 4.5-5.0 MPG to 5.7-7.3 MPG pulling. empty it remained 9.8-11.2 MPG. The wife and I just returned from a 2000 mile trip with our home in tow and I can't believe that just a chain set could make this kind of difference.
Ok Thanks it really sounds worth doing.Between the Edelbrock 600 carb and the timing gear swap and a good strong AOD later maybe I will get 15 mpg. Thanks for the help.
