axle play

Hey guys i have a 1988 F150 4x4 with a 8.8 rear end i have some in and out play on one of the axles on the back,it's not much just enough to hear the axle hit the pin in the differential,i replaced the axle bearings and the play is still there,anyone know what causes this and what the fix is?

There's supposed to be a little play. How much play are we talking about?

probably less than 1/4 inch,not enough to loose the axle clip,but enough you can hear the axle hit the pin in the differential going around a turn once in a while..

While in there did you notice is the groove for the c-clip hogged out at all? Axle bearings wouldn't prevent the in and out movement of an axle, only the up and down or front to back play. I am assuming that the rear end is not limited slip?
