Variable Venturi Carb question

Variable Venturi Carb question
I have an "82 Ford F150 with the 351" and a 2 bbl Variable Venturi Carb. I have asked many folks about replacing the carb, and received to many answers. Does anyone know what will replace it? What is required? Replacement carb manufacturer and Model # would be helpful. OR, what years of the Variable Venturi carb will fit this application? Thanks for your responses.

i very very highly sugest getting rid of that damn VV and switch out of it and go with a good ole' carb and a DS2 set up,it will clean the engine conpartment up,and itf u dont care about emitions then get rid of ur air pump and egr also,it helps asteticaly,but its up to u,tell us wut u want out of this truck,wuts it used for all that jazz....

Thanks for the responses. The truck is transportation and light hauling. What's happening, is the truck runs and drives. When in neutral it revs up no problem, but under load it won't go over 35 mph. This happened on the way home from an auction. Thought at first it might have been the cat, but cut off the exhaust in front of the muffler and it made no difference. I have heard the carbs are crap so I suspect that is the problem. Unfortunately it has cold air and a nice stereo or I could just shoot it.

If it was the cat, you need to cut it off in front of the cat, not the muffler...The vv carbs are junk, no question there. I have bolted regular 2 bbl carbs right in place, pretty much a straight swap. To check the cat, without cutting, here is some ways I have been able to determine cat plugging.. When you are trying to get up to speed, it starts to choke off , no power, falls on it's face, then you let off the throttle, and it starts to pick up speed and power, then falls on it's face again... You keep back pedalling like that, and it continues to pick up speed that way, but wouldn't if you held the pedal steady. I had that happen towing a trailer, lots of fun trying to make hills that way...

I don't have numbers, just a regular Motorcraft 2 barrel from a late 70's motor of the same size, happened to be a 302. Nothing else needed done, it ran fine, all linkage hooked up.

If the problem occurred "all of a sudden" I'd suspect the motor "jumped time" due to a worn timing chain/sprocket. I kinda suspect the reason most people badmouth the Variable Venturi carburetors is they don't have a clue about how they operate or how to decipher what's wrong.

i agree that if it was a "working" one second and "oh sh**" the next then yes ur timing must have jumped. IMO get rid of the VV and TFI( there was a recall on it so no good no matter wut) and go with a normal(prior to 75') carb and a ds2 set up and pull out all your VV computer stuff.
sorry to rant there but it is just my opinion and the world is made of them.
