I do not think you have a heater core problem, but it is a possibility. Just to let you know I have a 2004 Screw Lariat and it has had that antifreeze smell after turning off the air conditioning(if you can call it that)since it was new. Ford tells me there is nothing wrong.
I remember others talking about this when the 2004's first came out. I never heard what it was or how to fix it.
Does anyone really know what this is?

I'm not sure of the cause, but my 06 S-Cab with just over 300 miles on the clock does the same thing. Switch to A/C and you smell antifreeze momentarily, but the smell goes away as quickly as it appears. I was hoping it would go away, but maybe not!

I had that problem for about a year on my new '04 FX4. It went away after that. I never had low coolant and never saw coolant on the ground or floorboard. I even went so far as to have the dealer pressure test the system. No leak down.
