1989 f150 302 w/ Mazda 5spd. I was attempting to change the shifter boot on top of the tranny, with the shift stick removed, and the stub in the transmission. I got a little carried away and the stub came out w/ the boot. I think it's in 1st gear. When I reinstalled the stub and shifter, the shift stick won't move at all. Looking down inside the tranny,it looks like there's two rails, the one on the right being in the back position and the left side, the one the stub drops right into,of course!, is a little further ahead of the right side. I need some help, is there a way to line both the rails back up or do I need to get the stub down into the slot on the right side. Also, on top of the stub were two small rings, almost like a retaining ring, but they were just laying on top of the stub. They don't appear to do anything, I wonder if they were part of the old boot that desinegrated(spelling). Any Mazda tranny experts out there ? Thanks . Nibog
Ok the metal rings are supposed to be there on either side of the bushing. they weren't retaining rings, but more like a spring if I remember correctly. i apologize as its been a long time since I've had this apart. I seem to recall the haynes manual having a diagram.
as for the shifting rails...there should be 3 in there. use a big screwdriver to get everything back to the center position (neutral) then reinstall the shift lever.
Thanks for the info, I couldn't reply last night, we had power failure right after I posted. Low92flareside,the rings are just laying on top of the ball on the stub. They're real thin metal and don/t attach to anything. At first I thought they were the problem, but that proved wrong. What bushing are you referring to? I'll try to get a Haynes manual today. Thank You,Nibog
Low92flareside, Thanks, sounds like I'm missing some parts. It dosn't look like anything holds the stub/shifter in except the dust boot. I thought it was a poor design. I think I have a Haynes manual, the Chilton wasn't much help.
Low92flareside and Mikeyswood, Thanks for the help. A little screwdriver massage and it went right into neutral. To quote my Aussie friends,"No Worries". All of my truck books are Chiltons,I'am off to find a Haynes or back to the Ford house for a diagram of the shifter and stub. Non of this was in the installation instructions for the new carpet either. Thanks again, Nibog
