Turbo

I'm the very proud owner (along with Ford) of a 06 F250 4x4 Lariet extended cab
My first diesel and as they say "you can have the keys when you can pry them from my cold dead fingers"
My last truck was 03 4.0 ranger..hauled butt and sucked gas
Now for my question...What is this turbo whine everyone seems to love to hear?
When I put my foot in the gas, all I hear is what sounds like the air intake of a gas motor thru the air cleaner. Kind of like a 4 barrel carb.
Is that the sound everyone talks about. I'm thinking I should hear something like a jet engine.
I have 2,000 miles on the truck and get about 14 miles to the gallon around town with the ac running. About right?
The boost seems to max out 30 to 33 before the automatic shifts.
I also get a diesel smell thru ac every once in a while, more so when sitting at a light. Is this normal.
I'm I expecting to much as I thought diesel with turbo would be lighting fast, kind of put you against the seat power.
Should it be quicker than a 5.4 F150?
Drove an f150(caruck), then gas powered F250 (seemed under powered for truck) , last a diesel and I feel in love.
Takes me back to when you bought a car or a truck, not a mix of the two.
Thanks for any answers in advance
