Taurus SHO Q's
Good luck!
We are helpful!

I'm not sure where all of these horror stories of SHO's came from, but the v6's if maintained are killer cars! Sure they are not as cheap as a Tercel to maintain, but then again, you're not in a Tercel...
Do the 60K service, change the rod bearings for $30 bucks, and you're running well into the 300K range, still running like a raped ape.
BTW- If the cams are welded in the v8's they are great cars too.
Sounds like some of you guys had maintenance issues. And if you can't work on it yourself (and you take them to the dealer to boot) you shouldn't own one. Wither the dealer doesn't know what the heck it is, (seriously- I've had mechanics decline to work on my aftermarket motor in my Taurus) and they will charge you waaaaaay more than they should.
I'll probably buy SHO #6 before too long...
WHOOPS! Forgot to answer your question...
Things to look for-
- 60K services done
- Subframe bushings
- clunking rear struts/caps
- rust around rear wells & trunk
- READ THE CODES! (paperclip needed- that's all) www.shophoenixproject.com for info
- rod bearings if over 120K (for the most part- some go earlier)
- HVAC (heater cores are a pain to replace)
- motor mounts
- no burnouts! (diff pins can snap- look for bald front tires & stay away)
- clutch (if previous owner can actually drive one) can last well over 100K if driven properly... Like any manual trans car.
- If looking at an ATX, they like to die. Stay away from the '93 ATX's.

Buy a fun, unique car... it's just fun to hand someone their hat in a Taurus at 140+... Especially a Maxima...
