302 coil/distributor problem

302 coil/distributor problem
Got a 1970 302 engine with points. Its got new plugs, wires, coil, rotor, points/condenser. Set the point gap and turned the ignition to on, went back out and checked to see if I had fire to the points, which I do, but everytime they spark Im getting a pretty strong arc jumping from the positive and negative side of the coil, to the center were the coil wire goes. Any ideas as to whats wrong here?

Is this with the coil wire in place, or not? If not, it could be the spark taking the path of least resistance to find a ground. Put the coil wire in and set the dist. end of it near a ground, then try it. If it still does it, I'd try the old coil, you may have gotten a bad one.

Your plug gap could be too wide. Also, check the resistance of your plug wires. Last but not least, check the gap between the contacts underneath the distributor and the rotor end as it would sit in the distributor, in case you got a mis-boxed rotor.
