The Pertronix kit has all the instructions to determine this. I've been told that Ford uses a resistor wire, but I'm not sure of this.
If you just install the Pertronix converter and no coil change, I think you just install it and don't change anything. Just make sure the read the instruction, but it is straight forward. The instructions basically say: if you have a resistor on already, use it, otherwise don't.
