The light on my shifter handle that says off will not light up is there a way to replace this light or do you have to replce the whole handle assy.I drive through small towns most of the time with speed limits under 35 mph and always forget to turn the overdrive off the light would help plus isn't it suppose to flash codes if I am having problems with the tranny.Any info would be appreciated.
Had the same problem with my "new" '92 bronco a few weeks ago, and the folks here were kind enough to get me fixed up, so i hope that i can return the favor. The light may be bad, but it's LED, so that's a long shot. More likely, it's the three wires going to the overdrive cancel switch/light. These are really prone to breaking. Mine actually looked like they were cut right at the retaining clip which holds the wires in place. Remove the top and bottom steering column cover (you'll need to take out the ignition cylinder, just turn to "run", and push in the pin on underside of cylinder; also may have to unscrew the column tilt lever). Slide the shift lever "sleeve" up out of the way, and this should expose the wires. It'll probably look like one big wire, but it's actually 3 very small gauge ones. You'll know pretty quick if that's the problem. Hope this helps!
The OD light may not be prone to going out, but it is possible. Mine went out on my 93. Personally, I would change the light before checking codes or taking anything apart. On the end of the shifter, where the light is, there is an indention on the back of the handle where you can stick a screwdriver or key or anything to pop off the cap on the end. The light just pulls out. I got my new one at a junkyard when I bought my new shift plunger. But, you could also test to see if it is the light is out by getting your Bronco up to speed and pressing the button. Watch the RPMs, and if they jump up or go down when you press the button but the light doesn't illuminate, the light is probably blown.
Thanks for the replys, theres nothing wrong with the truck she is great I just want to get this light working It bugs me.I did take a look at it before I posted and didn't see away to get to it,I thought it might have a cover that slides or something.I had it checked for codes just for ^#@# and giggles and there are none. Thanks DallasLewis I will give it a check.
