Every time i drive in my friends ranger it makes a loud squeaking sound usually when going over little bumps. I was told that maybe its the spacers between the leaf springs. Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be causing this squeaking? Thanks
Why not rock the vehicle to try to replicate the sound, then try to pinpoint where it's somming from. And yes, I have seen the nylon isolaters between leaf springs on Rangers wear out. If that's the case, you're not gonna find em at the dealer. Been there, done that. Instead, go to your local u-pull and remove them from a wreck, ideally from the passenger side (typically less wear).
If your Ranger is the year and type that uses radius arm bushings, that could be the culprit too. My Ranger, (and 92 Explorer) both make a squeaking/popping noise at the RA bushings when I go over bumps... but especially when I apply the brakes at low speed. The Explorer's RA bushings are brand new OEM and the Ranger just has new OEM bushings on the passenger side because the exhaust heat destroyed it. I carefully watched under the truck while my wife went from drive to reverse (back and forth) with the brakes on. You'd be surprised how much those bushings compress. There's lots of movement. To verify the source of the noise, I removed the big nut holding the bushings together and sprayed some lube in there (yes... I know I probably ruined them, but I should have gotten polyurethane aftermarket bushings anyway). The noise went away with the lube...temporarily.
Thanks for the reply's. The ranger is a '97 and if i remember correctly i think the squeaking was coming mostly from the front of the truck while riding on a dirt road. Cowboybilly9mile... good idea, next time i see the truck i'll try to pinpoint where its actually coming from but first i'll check those leaf springs.
Good to know I am not alone with a very squeaky Ranger. Mine too is coming from the front end in my 98 extended cab Ranger. If I ever get around to fixing it, I will post my solution, though I would like to hear about yours also.
