I have a 95 Flareside 5.0 5 spd. I just bought a 90 mustang 5.0 for a song. I want to swap out some of parts and eventually build up the mustang bottom end and do the swap later. I need to know what was better with the mustang 5.0. Can i steal injectors, heads, ect and gain power. Currently it has a cold air intake, throttle body spacer, long tube headers, custom y pipe with the cat removed, and single three inch from there. With the mustang motor comes equal flow headers, computer, chip ect.
As far as I know, the heads and injectors are the same between the truck and the mustang. You will likely have to re-wire some things to get the mustang computer to work, but it is possible with some work. If your truck is mass air already, it would be a little easier, but I don't really know if it would be much better than the truck computer.
As far as i know the mustang 5.0 is 30 horse more. is that just in the intake and exhaust? it looks like those are the only two things that are different. Basically i my truck to really rip. with what i have done it runs 0-60 in around 8.5 and the quarter in 16.25. thats just not good enough and i dont want to have one of those 88-98 chevs roast me. it would be a loss for all fordkind.
also, are these time ok for what i have done. my rig has 200,000 kms, 3.08 limited slip ( which is really holding me back ), stock bottom end, heads, ect.
The mustang intake is completely different than the truck, has much smaller runners and should produce better low rpm torque than the truck. The 5.0 cam is also bigger than anything ever put into a truck. The heads are identical. My advise is jerk the trunk plant, and drop in the 5.0 from the stang with it's forged crank and better cam and intake. I have driven a 5.0HO equipped truck and it a big improvement!!
Keep the long tubes and sell the equal lengths, they are more trouble than they're worth. I would put the mustang motor in using the truck intake. The mustang guys install the intakes off of explorers to get more HP. Less hassle plugging everything in too. I know 87 mustangs had speed density computers with the same or comparible cam so that should be fine.??? Be sure to check the pilot bearing to see if it is the right size. Put a set of 3.73's in and you'll be ready!
