I have 1998 ranger, 4.0 4X4 ext cab. w/ 110000 miles. After it has been running a while and I park it, when I come back out and start it, it makes a loud sound as if a blower were on. It is really loud and not a usual sound. It only does this when the weather is hot. I didn't do it this winter. Please advise.
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!! It happens within an hour or two of driving it. It does it untill i hit 3rd gear. (manual tranny) or for about five minutes, then it stops. and runs normal. Do you notice a power increase? Because i do.
When the fan clutch is locked in you should notice a slight drag on the engine. When it releases then it will feel like you have more power because it is not pulling all that air like a prop.
Really, so i'm not insain, because it like to squeak the tires when this clutch fan is acting up. well, thats good to know. one last question, is it causeing any dmage, should i try to fix it?
When you start the truck the clutch should lock in for a couple minuts or until you start moveing, then it should unlock & get quiet. It should only lock back in if the engine temp comeing throuh the rad gets too high then it will release after it cools the rad back down. After you shut the truck off when warm out it may kick in when restarted & then release pretty quik. If that is the noise you are discribing then that is normal.
On hot days when runnung the A/C ( if you have it ) you will notice it more.
My trucks temp is normal, but i dont know the exact temp. Never seen it hit high enough to cause any of my concern(but thats not saying much). But that sounds like the problem, or lack of. i just got the truck back in agust, and the only other stick shift i ever drove in the summer was a dodge 2500, with a turbo diesle. I was never sure exectly what the noises were that came from that, and since they are soo different, i wouldn't campare the two.
