I'm running just a muffler, nothing afterwords either, just two turndowns I welded on (the tubing running to the tips had gotten in the way when I wanted to replace my shocks, so I sawzalled it lol).

Never had any grief, and it's LOUD.

Then again...there are a lot of people around here with louder. We live in the south and our cops like it. I've gotten comments from them before.

Mind you this is a town of 25K people in which you can race the cops out of a light if you want. They'll do it to. And if you can find one of the undercover Monte Carlos, they'll run you right over. Dunno what those things got under the hood.

i would talk with a few cops in a different town and get their opinon.just to feel things out.also check for a local noise ordinance.the cat will not effect the noise.the cat is a federal emissions offense and i believe is a $5,000 + fine. i would put a high flow cat on there just cause.if you are gonna fight it, make sure everything else on the truck is legal. what state and town do you live in?were you revving the truck after 10pm in a residential neighborhood? fyi: in almost any city and town revving a vehicle after 10pm is considered disturbing the piece and the cop has a right to give you a ticket. i support loud vehicles. i have dual 5" straight pipes. please be responsible with a loud vehicle and not go revving real late at night during the week. dont wanna **** the wrong people off. good luck.

Add a crossover pipe before the mufflers; it will mellow it out a bit.

Here is the wisconsin law.

“no person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle.”

I just recently redid the exhaust (this morning) on my 99 silvarado because of getting greif from the state cops. Went from a si-do 18 inch magnaflow with 3.5 by 24 inch tips to a single three inch system with a flow-pro mx 502 muffler. It is accualy louder now, however at least in my area they are looking for dual pipes, or no pipes at all. Plus while it is louder than my magnaflow was, it is not overly loud and with what appears to be just a single stock pipe sticking out I shouldn't catch to much greif as long as I dont romp on it.

Please note that in my first post in this thread, I did, in fact, give advice on how to make it legal.

With that said, in what I have seen in my life, you are only likely to get pulled over for an exhaust infraction if the officer suspects he has a bigger fish to fry with you, but that's the most obvious reason to pull you over. That may or may not be harassment, I'm just being honest.

Oh yeah, and for perspective, lest you should think that I'm bitter, I'm now driving my fifth vehicle that I've made louder than stock, and I've never once been pulled over for it. I'm just stating an observation.

BTW I don't have cats on any of my trucks except for the Ranger. My trucks are really loud. Just don't give them a reason to pull you over. Be respectful to them. Most of them are on a power trip anyways. IMHO...

tell the cop to listen to the god awful harley's and their loud annoying sound, they will never bother you again.

I have a 390 with headers, 2 18" glasspacks(flipped the wrong way ), and then turndowns right after the cab, it's loud but nothing like the harley's around here.

I hope you're kidding! Tips have no influence on the sound unless it is a resonated tip.

Not True... Tips will change the sound of an exhaust system. Resonated or not don't matter. The longer and bigger the tip the deeper the tone gets. Besides that, they do look good.

I have had exhaust put on then started the vehicle.. Added tips same day to prove a point. They do give a different tone. No sense of going on with this one I guess. It will just start to become a flaming war. lol... Good luck guys....
