77 Power Assist Steering Coupler Worn Out ! Where can I find parts??
I have a 1977 hydraulic assist steering Highboy. The steering is not leaking just has a lot of play. See below.
I have gone through the steering and have narrowed down where the slop is. I pulled the steering gear box and there is no play in it. The steering coupler that joins the gear box to the steering shaft has all of the play in it. It bolts tightly against the gear box but the metal squares that slide onto the metal dowels on the shaft have a lot of wear. They are not square any more. Does someone make these squares? I can't seem to find anything in LMC catalogs.
Are you talking about the 4x4 slip steering shaft with u-joints and Rag joint styler couplers on the ends ?
Btw, no need for the Word "Help"

When I done the steering conversion on my truck I had the same problem. I just turned the squares. Use the sides that are not worn the outside housing will still be worn but the squares won't be. It helped mine alot.
I turned the squares sideways. It did help some. I am thinking of crimping in on the sides a little where the squares wore into the metal. I am guessing the remaining slop is in the gear box. When I pulled the coupling off there is no play in the steering shaft and the steering wheel.
i had some of the same problems w/ my 77. i tightened up the steering alot by turning the squares like you mentioned, and machining a new pin that the squares sit on, making it oversize and drilling out the hooles in the squares to match. i also put in a new u-joint on that shaft. those things helped a lot. all the rest of my play is in theend of the assist linkage
