I need a tow bar to pull the truck. I'm moving from Kansas to Wisconsin and I'm planing on towing my 88 f150 back instead of driving it. I seen them for like $150 bucks. Which will be about half as much as I would spent on gas driving it home. The only ones i can find have 5000lbs towing weight on them. Will this work or do i need a heavier duty tow bar. has any one used such a thing on there trucks or does anyone have one. Any help would be great thanks
Unless you want to have a towbar for future towing purposes, it might be easier to just rent a tow dolly or a vehicle trailer. Also, the towbar will require some sort of bracket on your bumper, and the wiring or rig for working tailights. You'll have to remove the rear driveshaft with the tow dolly or towbar.
I think the gross weight rating (total) on the 1/2 ton trucks is 5500-6200 lbs, so if you're not hauling the truck with a bunch of crap in it, you're fine.
Oh yeah, you can back up with a vehicle trailer, but not with a towbar or tow dolly!
