i picked up a 78 4X2 camper special yesterday to use as a parts truck.
the cab is in very good condition, just needs a few small fixings here and there.
it has complete a/c minus the belt, but that is behind the seat. full tinted glass. in cab hood release/lock. working am/fm/cb, complete with antenna switching box and antenna. good C6 trans. dual fuel tanks. the frame looks like new. 2 good fenders. good hood. good grill in the bed. good bumpers. all electrical looks good, and everything works.
now for the bad.
the doors and bed are all dented up. the inside of the bed has 4 holes on the wheel wells where the side mount tool box supports were ripped off last week.(not by the owner, but by someone else)
the front end is wacky. there is 1/2 turn play in the steering wheel.
the 400 has a dead miss, and is only running on 7 cylinders.

my 79's cab is SHOT!!! the roof pan is ready to fall off. the driver side floor pan has a 2 inch X 12 inch hole near the rocker.
the passenger "B" pillar has 3 alligator holes in it. the electrical system has some gremlins in it, it needs some new plugs and connectors.
single fuel tank(new) with aftermarket saddle tanks.
the 351M needs rod bearings.
the 4X4 works great.
bed is in very good condition, it just needs wheel surround patch panels.

now for the ideas. what should i do???
use the 78 parts on the 79 4X4, or put the 4X4 gear under the 78, and use the 79 bed??

 

hows the 79s frame? if its good, id blast and paint it, and use that as the platform to build your truck. its much easyer than converting a 4x2 to 4x4. sounds like a good find!

 

Is the 79 a camper special also?

 

no. the 79 is a trailer special.

 

I was just wondering cuz I thought the camper specials had different beds than standard trucks.

 

thats the super camper special, it has a longer wheel base. and a spare tire compartment in the passenger side bed side.

 

Thats why I was asking. I wasn't completely sure if it would work. I just wanted to get all the info before I said anything.
