Ok, my truck was given to me by a friend who rolled it and i have been piecing it back together ever since. the truck won't start now since the last time i drove it, I thought it may be the battery, so i replaced that with 750 cca, then i thought the solenoid, so i replaced that, then i replaced the starter, and now i have replaced the solenoid to starter wire, the positive battery cable, the negative battery cable, and made all new connections on the solenoid. when i start the truck, it cranks very very weakly only a few times, and then the starter or solenoid makes a grinding sound. i cant tell which one it is.what else could it be since all that is brand new?
Just how hard is this motor to turn over? Can you put a socket on the front of the crank and turn the motor over? Because if you did everthing you said and made sure all the connections are tight (NOT finger tight but wrench tight and if wingnuts tightened with pliers) then it has to be the motor is super stiff.
Battery ground should always go directly to the engine, then to chassis (or a seperate wire if you wish). The starter is the one item that pulls a real lot of amps. In comparison the rest all together don't come close.
Starter drive gear binding with flywheel (or flex plate) ring gear? Don't know if it'll do that on a 460 but I've had it happen on a couple of GM products where shims had to be added.

I've never seen a US made Ford starter with shims in over 40 year od working on them.
