Brake Dust
My 2006 Escape has a dark grease substance along the inside of one of the rear wheels; all the way around. The brake itself is also this color. The other wheels and brakes are all spotless. The vehicle has only 7k miles. I noticed it when picking it up at the dealer for warranty work. The rep said it was brake dust, and normal. It's not just a trace, it's quite noticeable. Does this sound like brake dust? Is it normal?

Clean it off and see if it comes back. The brakes are likely to make more dust as they break in than when they are in regular service. If it comes back, then look into it. It sounds most like the tire crap they put on new cars before delivery. Dealerships use the thickest crap for tire black they can get their paws on. Consequently, it gets all over the wheels too and any dust from the brakes, road or otherwise will find its way into it. Clean them and see what happens.
