Ignition problems

I have an '87 F250 with the 6.9L Diesel. Ran great up until this morning. Now it won't start. It tried to crank the first time, but when I turned the key the second time it felt like something broke at the key. Now, when I turn the key, the light for the glow plugs does not come on...none of the accessories work, but I do have electrical power since the headlights and all other "hard wired" items work. When I jump across the relay the engine will turn over but not start. I replaced the ignition switch tumbler and starter relay....same problems. So my guess is there is some type of switch oe fuse between the ignition tumbler and starter relay...but I have no idea how to get to it...or what it may look like. Has anyone else had a problem like this?

There is an actuator that runs from the ignition switch to the top of the steering column, then along the top of the column towards the dash. It's known for breaking. You can take the column shrouds off, turn the ignition to ON (not START), then push in with a screwdriver or something on what is left of the actuator at the top-center of the column where it goes under the dash, and the truck should turn over. I drove my '90 F150 about a week this way until I could get the $15 part from the dealer and fix it. It's a pot-metal part.

That's one possibility, anyway.

Thanks for the information. I will give that a try...I'm running out of possible solutions.
Two quick questions...I've looked and I've looked... and I don't see any screws that allow me to take the shroud off.

Second...where did you get the part from? If I need one...I don't want to spend alot of time searching for it.

Thanks!

Well....I dug around a bit more and it appears that the ignition switch at the base of the steering column has broken. I reached up there and found pieces of plastic with some electrical contacts and a spring.

What's the easiest way to get to this thing? Remove the instrument panel or drop the steering column?

drop the column from the dash. there are 2 bolts that hold it up. then you will have enough room to get to the switch. it is held on the column with 2 bolts. the hardest part of doing the switch is unplugging it. once you get the wires unplugged, it is a breeze. put the wires in the new switch, and bolt it up, but leave it kinda loose so you can adjust it. once you have it so it will start and go into accessory position, tighten the switch bolts, tighten the column to dash bolts and you are done. maybe a 30 minute job.
