my truck made a weird new noise on the way to work this morning. once while braking, and once while accelerating, a high-pitched squeal/squall noise came from under the hood. (not like a belt squealing- more of a metallic sound)
it's a plain-jane f100. power nothing. only one belt to the alternator.
the only thing that's changed recently is the addition of a pertronix and blaster coil about two weeks ago, and i also tightened the belt to the alternator. (to stop the squealing it was making when too loose.)
but, i've driven it all over town since making those changes, and everything was fine- the noise just started this morning.
i know this is vague as all get-out, but i'm looking for any ideas...i'll be able to look under the hood this evening.
Sam, if it’s squealing there all the time try taking off the belt and see if it goes away. I would guess that your fan belt is glazed or it’s a bearing in the alternator or water pump.
this may sound a little odd, but if you can get it to squeal while parked by revving to that certain rpm or repeatedly revving or whatever, you can take a long screwdriver and use it as a makeshift stethoscope to locate where the trouble is coming from. Sounds like a bearing in water pump or alternator or something like that.
