F-550 doesn't seem right

I drive an '04 F-550 chip truck with the 5R100 with just under 13,000 miles all recalls done at Maita Ford. The problem is the fuel mileage, It only gets an average of 7-8 mpg. I have recently noticed oil on a couple of boots. It is constantly towing a 3500 pound chipper, the chip box is pretty beefy as well but we have never put the truck on a scale. Is their something going on or is this normal?

I've got an '06 550 with a 14' stakebody and it gets about the same, maybe a 1/4 mpg more. Been told it's normal. I do idle it for a while to let it wam up and cool down, but I don't see any way around that. Additives don't do much either.

That's probably about right for that kind of weight. Also, 1 hour of idle time is equal to 33 miles of driving.

Thanks for responding guys. I only let it warm up faor 2-3 minutes pretty much start it hook up the chipper check over everything and go. A little more warm up time in the winter but mileage has gone down 2 mpg since winter. I do let it cool down about the same as warm up depending on witch way I return to yard.
