Tranny fluid change
I have a 2004 F350 DRW V10 gas and I'd like to change the auto tranny fluid out to a synthetic. It is my understanding that there is no paper filter anymore in these transmissions, just a cleanable screen. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Secondly, I plan on just draining the pan and converter, then replacing the fluid. Could someone let me know how many quarts this will take.
I also intend on replacing the rear axle fluid to synthetic, any idea how many quarts this will take?
Reccomendations on fluid would be apprecuiater on both tranny and diff.
Thanks.
You should use a fluid that meets Ford spec. I believe that you will need a Mercon V tranny fluid and the diff fluid is a syn that is something like 75W90 or 75W140?
I like the Mobil 1 and Valvoline synthetics, but any syn meeting spec should work fine.
Don't know your model but I bet in a full fluid change you are looking at about 12 to 16 quarts for the tranny and 2 or 3 for the diff. You may need limited slip additive for the rear if you have a LS diff. Some diff fluids already have it but typically when I use Mobil or Valvoline I need to add one tube of additive. I think the brand I use is StaLube, looks like a toothpaste tube.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
