OK normally I'm against the idea of lifting a 2wd truck, but I got used to the height of my dearly departed Bronco and I miss it in my '77. Also the wheels off the bronco will fit the 77 but they are wrapped with some really nice 31" tall tires. I really like the look of this wheel a tire combination and want to use it on the pick-up. OK enough of the introduction now on to the questions....
I went searching for a lift kit for the truck, but I can't seem to find any that say they are made for the 2wd pick-up. Can I use a lift kit that says its for a 73-79 4x4 f-series on my 2wd f-150? If not has anyone else put a lift on a 73-79 2wd truck, and if so which system did you use? I was only thinking doing a 2- 2.5 inch lift, if that matters.
Go to autofab.com - They are one of the only companies that makes a kit to lift your truck. A 3" lift (front only and no shocks) will run $700, that includes new I beams - drag link and springs. No you can't use a 4X4 kit due to the 2WD using I beams and the 4X4's using axles with leaf springs.
Thank you SRT77, however that is a little more than I wanted to spend. What do you all think of going with a body lift instead of a suspension lift? I found one at JC Whitney (see it here) that says it will work for my truck. Any comments?
i dont know how much you like your truck, but you could probally find a 4x4 truck for a decent price and sell or trade yours for it. thats just a option though.
I would call the manufacturer and make sure that kit will work. I was researching body lifts for my 77 F150 Ranger 2WD and some kits say they won't work if the steering box is in a certain location. Also if you do a body lift, plan on replacing some bolts and get a couple cans of penetrating lube or your life will suck durinng that job.
if your truck's body is in good shape, i'd go find the biggest POS 4x4 F150 you can find and then just swap the body over onto it... chances are you can find a 4x4 for less than the price of a lift and a body lift is halfway to a body swap- its already unbolted. I think a stock heigth f150 is the height you're looking for... JMO
I lifted my '79 2wd shortbed a few years back. I sold it about a year and a half ago. It turned out great. I used 6" lift coils from JC Whitney. Drop I beam brackets from an 80's model 4x4, My front end shop got me a drop pitman arm. It was not just a bolt on deal...I had to fab a little, but it wasnt that hard, and trust me, my skills are very limited! I was running 33" BFG's on 15x10 wheels. I'll post a before and after shot.
