Just wanted to make sure that when I go to get me some extra coolant that I have already the green so I can get some Wally World green replacement. Just want to make sure that the following is correct:
A)It is OK to get the 50/50 Etheyl Glycol Do Not Add water
AND
B)It can NOT be extended life green.
Are both of those right or some right or neither? Thanks,
RC
you have ethylene glycol in your engine if your's is green. do not put propylene glycol (gold, orange, pink) in the system or you will have a whole bunch of jello. when you mix the two together they react and make a gelatin-like substance, don't want that, it wont circulate too well. so you can do whatever you want, as long as there is no propylene.
you will have to buy twice as much of the 50/50. you will have to buy 9 gallons instead of only 5. (only needs 8 but need some for maintenance.) you won't have to buy distilled water, however. are you just draining and replacing the coolant, or flushing out?
btw, green is green. as long as there is not some new propylene glycol that is green, youre fine.
isnt it better or easier to do the flush and change over to the gold coolant i am going to do the flush and coolant filter soon and was wondering if I should switch over to the gold coolant? Thanks for all the help
you need to get ALL of the old stuff out. i mean flush it three or four times until what you get out is the same color as it went in (distilled water). im staying with green, unless they make a cool blue coolant i could not resist. i would probably drink it though.
with the gold coolant you dont have to test it with the strips? or do you still have to do that? thanks for the help Kris. What part of IL are u going to be traveling thru?
we are headed to Moline for the John Deere factory. that is our only planned reservation. i can find out what roads we will be traveling on, see if youre close. maybe stop in for lunch or something??
duh, forgot to answer the question. the gold does not use coolant strips. most go 100-150,000 miles on a change depending on if it's extended life or if it's just ford OEM gold stuff. also a coolant filter is a wise decision to do while you have the coolant out.

Neither....just need some for the toolbox as a just in case.
Medic-as long as you are checking and maintaining your SCA levels, any of the stuff off the shelf at Wal-Mart should be fine. The only coolant they have there that might not be ethlyene glycol based would be the low toxicity stuff.
Color means nothing--you can get Zerex G-05 coolant from Ford that is Gold, from John Deere that is Green, from Chrysler that is orange, and from Mercedes that is light yellow-- all the exact same ethlyene glycol based coolant.
Strokinit--if you have a hankering for blue in your block, do some research into Evans Coolant--It's expensive, but lifetime waterless coolant and it is blue. It has to look pretty cool in the degas bottle.
