Well I think I may sell my 02 F350. I have spent a ton of money trying to get better fuel mileage, with no success. I thought the chip & exhaust would help a lot but just a waste of money. I even changed the sensors. Maybe I'll go to Ford this weekend and see how much for a trade-in I can get. I was having a lot of fun with this truck too.
Yeah, I feel your pain. I am filling up 3 vehicles and damn it bites. I am glad my truck gives me 18mpg most of the time with the running i do. Our v6 explorer does 19mpg and the v6 mustang does 22. I am gonna get rid of the plorer and stang and get the wife either the yaris, or a vw diesel. You know, something that gets 40+ that way there will never be a reason to sell my truck "cuz its costing too much"
I went from a steady 18 mpg to 15 from going to bigger tires. I thought that the lower rpms would increase my milage. I was very wrong. However I just discovered and replaced a stuck rear caliper. That wheel was running about 60 degrees hotter than the others. Hopefully the freed up wheel will result in higher mpg. We'll see.
I know this is a Ford site, but this could be a Ford thing since i think they will soon start putting cummins in there truck... But my dads 01 cummins with a 4.50ish somthing rearend and 35 inch tires, while keeping the RPMs down below 2000 gets like 25 mpg on a bad day... We can drive from Reno, to the Bay Area and back on 3/4s of a tank... thats 600+ both ways, driving over the sierras..

How big of a tank? 600 miles on 3/4 of a tank ain't no big deal, I can do that driving half and half. Are those lieometer mpg's? Plus Dodges are poorly made, ugly, and make too much noise.
Yup. It's been said before - the Cummins in a Dodge usually gets better mileage than a PSD in a Ford. I've read many reasons for it - the three usually cited are: at 5.9 liters, it has smaller displacement and (theoretically) lower internal friction; 2) it has 6 cylinders, resulting in lower internal friction;, and 3) it revs lower than a PSD, resulting in lower internal friction.
I don't know how true these reasons are, but they make sense.
However, my reason for buying a PSD was that the Cummins is a 500,000 mile engine in a 100,000 mile truck, while the PSD is a 400,000 mile engine in a 300,000+ mile truck.
Sure, with religiously followed maintenance and lots of repairs, you can get a Dodge to go as long as a Ford. I figured the lower mileage would more than make up for the much lower repairs comparing an AVERAGE Ford with an AVERAGE Dodge. There are always exceptions.

It's easier to say "Cummins is a great motor, b-b-but, it's in a DODGE!"
