Exhaust upgrade

I've posted this in another forum, so forgive me if you're reading this again. So, my "good deal" on a pair of mufflers last year wasn't so great and I am getting ready to do it all over again. Here's what I've got already: '87 f-150, automatic, 2WD, 302. Installed headers, removed the cat, and have true dual </span>exhaust with 2 mufflers. I am going to reinstall the cat (environmental reasons, green guilt), probably one from Dynomax that has 2 inlets and 2 outlets to accomodate the 2 pipes. I was thinking of going with a pair of </span>Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. But, I have heard that Dynomax makes a pretty good muffler with a deeper sound than the flowmasters. Any opinions on this issue? Particularly as to the service life of a Dynomax compared to Flowmasters, which last a long time. Also, are there any opinions about the 2-muffler set-up as opposed to a single muffler with one inlet and 2 outlets (essentially a </span>cat-back dual <span class="kLink" style="color: blue; position: relative; font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida;" lucida="" grande',arial,helvetica,sans-serif;font-weight:400;font-size:13.3333px="">exhaust</span> system)? Since I'm starting over, I am open to other folks' experience, including a single pipe from the cat to the muffler. I am going for a nice, deep sound, with a fairly unrestricted exhaust.</span>

I personally prefer the Flowmaster sound.

But I don't like baffles, I want a straight-through design, so I run two small racing Magnaflows on my dual setup...though it's too loud so I need to change something, perhaps add resonators or larger mufflers.

running true duals is going to lower your low end torque compaired to a single muffler with a dual outlet. i would go with the flowmaster series 40 if you want a loud rumble.

So what are the advantages/disadvantages to a lower low end torque? I don't tow a lot, but I do load up the bed from time to time.

Duals won't kill your low-end if you size the tubes correctly.
Many folks use tubing that is too large.

OK, what would be an appropriate size tube? I think I have 2.5 in. on now.

Thats right. Running duals wont hurt anything. Since you already have 2.5, keep it. Its slightly on the big side, but not worth getting new pipe.

x2
I think dual 2.25 might be better for a 302 but it's likely not worth the expense to change.

Actually, my pipes are 2-1/4 O.D. Just measured them last night. FYI, I've decided to go with a single dual-in, dual-out cat and use 2 Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. I'll probably get that done in the next week or so when it cools off. Damn, I hate this 110 degree weather!!!
