I'm kinda interested in this. I"m going into automotive engineering and i think it would be fun to play with and learn things with this. Its the thing where you have the laptop in the car controling the engine, or motitoring it. I think it would be fun to play with. I was just wondering if anyone has ever used one or knows where to find one?
You need an interface with which you can communicate with, and then you need the software to do it (which is proprietry, and you aren't going to find) - or have a completely reprogrammable PCM (I have a Motec M800 in my Mini - but that is WAY overkill for your situation).
Its a fun, but difficult to learn topic.
Things like Megasquirt - you may find interesting, but they are VERY simplistic compared to what most road vehicles run today.
Anyways - fire away wth any questions you have... I might be able to help... (I did this kind of stuff for a living not so long ago...)
There's a standalone system called Megasquirt that you can build yourself, and you can monitor certain engine parameters in real-time. It can be used to control fuel injection only or both injection and ignition. Go to their site: http://www.msefi.com/index.php and read up on it. All of your questions can be answered there.
