Neutral safety switch questions

I trying to get my back up lights to work on my 78 F-150 with auto/tilt column. Friends have told me to replace the NSS. My Haynes manual says it's on the steering column. I don't see it there. Another person said it's on the transmission. I do see a piece half moon shaped with wires coming off it where the kick down linkage is. In the NPD catalog it shows the NSS looking to me like it goes in the column. Where is the NSS and what is the part/switch I'm looking at on the transmission ? Thanks for your help

That is the 1/2 moon on the tranny. The older trucks had it on the column down by the firewall on top of the column tube.

It changed location to the tranny in 78.
The problem is ...it's extremely dirty.

Here is my list in order in how to clean it.

1) Use Varsol to and wire brush

2) Use Lacquer thinner (wear mask) and small detail bruch to clean small orifices

3) Use Electrical cleaner with wand (spray liberally into adjustment hole and rocker switch back and forth.

4) Use compressed air (with switch held in rag) to blow out and around all orifices.

Test switch without installing by attaching at firewall connection and turning inner collar while observing BU lights.

Good luck

I replaced the switch pictured above just two weeks ago. I played with mine trying to get it to work, which I was unable to do but I did get it to smoke. It's easier to replace than the procedures make it sound.

They are pricier than I thought. I was quoted $75 to 140 for the switch. I bought it at Napa for $75.

They'll never work once you let the smoke out of them...
