I have a 97 expedition that will start and run for a few seconds and cut off. I think it is a fuel problem (fuel pump), but before I start replacing parts I figured I run it pass ya'll. It seems if the fuel pump is the problem it would not start at all.
You must use a fuel pressure guage to properly test whether or not you have proper fuel pressure.
Some have used the "lollypop" style of tire pressure guages sucessfully, although messily.
The only thing I'd suggest replacing without doing any testing would be the fuel filter provided it has not been recently replaced. Any other parts replacement should be done only after performing diagnostics that indicate the part is faulty with a high level of certainty.
Just because it is making noise does not mean you have pressure at the fuel rail. A good fuel pressure gauge is under $30. I bought mine used for$10. My problem was a totally clogged filter on a 86 Bronco.
Thanks guys. I figured it out. First, I replaced the fuel filter. That did not work. After reading some other post I figured I would unplug the battery for a while incase it was a security issue. let the thing sit over night and this morning it cranked.
