Good or Bad Idea?

I posted awhile ago about a noise my f-250 PS is making when it is under load. When I am going up a steep hill and before it shifts out of overdrive, it makes a clicking or shuttering type noise. This weekend I was in a small town and their Ford mechanic went for a ride. He visually checked the manifold for leaks and said everthing looked good. He described it to thier diesel mechanic and he thought it might be the turbo. Due to time, I didn't have them look any further. Back home I called the Ford garage and told them about the noise. They want me to bring in the pickup but are not really interested in hearing the noise. He said that there is a 90% chance they can find the problem without hearing it. This makes me nervous. Any advice?

Thanks, Chad

Bad idea. Dealership=Stealership. Turbo is pretty simple device. Spin the shaft, grabbing ONLY the center nut, and feel for play if u suspect it's the turbo. Could be a U joint. Any vibration noise?

Don't feel any vibrations at the higher speeds, but now that you mention it, I do here some noises when I am taking off which could be a U joint.

Thanks, Chd

Yup....diesel's with their high torque trash crappy U joints faster, especially the one near the rear differential, than gassers. Install some Spicer(the best) greasables if u find that is your problem.

I think it might be the turbo bearing wearing out. I had a similar noise (which was clearly coming from under the hood) when towing up steep hills in OD. I was told it was waste gate chatter, vortex noise, etc..., and not to worry about it. Eventually, the bearing got loose enough for the turbine to hit the case and chip some blades. After that, truck sounded like a police siren, and I knew it was time for a new turbo. Bearings on old turbo were sloppy loose, which you can easily check for from intake side.

Sounds like it might be turbo stall. Letting the dealer get over on you for the cost of a new turbo is not going to fix it.

If it only happens for a few seconds at the shift point while loaded you have two options. A) Ignore it....a minor surge like that won't do any damage for many thousands of miles. B) Address it. You can fix turbo stall by eaither replacing the intake wheel with one designed for that problem, or replace the intake housing with a purpose designed unit.
