Hello everyone. So last summer the a/c system was rebuilt on my 79 F150, and we discovered that sometimes it would not engage. By fiddling with the slider switch we could usually get it to kick on, but not always. I was starting to wonder if a pressure switch was bad, or reading low and protecting the system. But my mom is driving it at the moment (and 2000 miles away), and she tried it today and it kicked on first try.
So has anyone had a defective slider switch that keeps the clutch from energizing? I dont even know where the a/c is commanded on, every diagram I see only shows a cable going someplace...
I see that LMC has some replacement parts for the dash control (factory a/c & dual tanks) I see the entire unit on car-part.com for ~$25, but wouldnt mind spending more for something new.
In the meantime, she's going to take it to a local shop to check it out and see if its something obvious and quick. I told her that if it was the slider, and they couldnt fix it correctly, to see if they could add a temporary bypass switch until I can fix it right.

Glad to hear that the part has a history of problems. Is it a simple electrical connection right off the slider? If I knew which part of the assembly did the actual connection I could start searching for a new part.
The $25 for the entire unit did surprise me, and I believe the highest price I saw was in the $100 range. Luckily, the two junkyards closest to the truck both want $25.
Looks like I'll have to wait for a shop to look at it before I do too much more pondering. She tried it today, and didnt engage. After about 10 seconds she said that something under the dash on the passenger side clicked, and she's never heard that before. Something similar to a solenoid click.
