Just wondering if anyone has any experience with Midas shops wether it be good or bad. I am coming up on 100k and want to change the plugs. Ford quoted me $245 and Midas quoted me $110 plus plugs.
Should I be able to trust the Midas shop, or would I be better off bringing it into Ford?
I think Ford is doing more for that 245 than just plugs... or is that what they told you. What parts is Midas using? Ford's have lasted 100,000 so far why not stay with it. Check with them again to see what all you get for that 245. If its just plugs, no thank you. You could save a bunch of money and just do plugs and wires yourself. It's really not that hard. For about $100 you could do plugs and wires and be done. If you don't have a reliable parts place near you; a friendly visit to one of FTE's sponsor wouuld be in order. Look up your truck on rockauto and see how much with discount your parts run.

I have brought vehicles to Midas before and they did a decent job and the cost is reasonable. The only thing you need to watch out for when dealing with them is they will look for items to run up the bill. If you ask them to check the brakes they will say you need rotors and other items even if you don't. They won't let you leave to get a second opinion or do it your self. This happenned to me once.
This can happen anywhere though. When they have the vehicle apart they know you are at their mercy.
Rywegh-the quote is what the service manager said it would cost to do just the plugs. I asked Midas what type of plugs they would put in, and he said bring in whatever ones you wanted.
Donjamer- I went to two local Midas shops within the past couple weeks... the first said that my front pads had 70% left on them and the second one today said the pads are nearing the end of their life...
Thanks for the responses so far. That's why I am asking so I can get a general feel for these. This is the first vehicle that I have had (19) so some things I am comfortable doing myself, but others, like the plugs, I am not.
I recommend doing it yourself. There is a sense of satisfaction in doing things yourself. I was just looking on Rockauto and noticed that the v8 are cop. Coil on Plug. This makes it easier all you need is plugs. $35-50 bucks and your set. You only replace the coils as they go bad. Unless you want to do more... If you have more questions PM me for my cell I will be glad to answer in as much detail as I can.
Rywegh thanks for the offer for help, I'll keep that in mind. I know it would be cheaper to do this myself, but I don't know if I am up to it. And if its only around $100 or so and I won't have to do this for another 5 years I wouldn't mind dishing that out. As long as some other people could give their opinions on Midas.
Midas' are only as good as the mech doing the work on your vehicle. As they don't pay much, you have one fairly decent mech in there with a bunch of trainees. When the trainees have been there for a while, THEY become dangerous as they are known as the EXPERTS!! And of course they are only as good (maybe NOT as good) as you! If the job is simple, like changing plugs and nothing goes wrong (like striping out a cylinder plug hole) there are good!! If something DOES go wrong, as above, they are a lousy shop.
So, you get what you pay for...if a reputable shop does the work and something goes wrong...it gets taken care of..at no cost to you. Otherwise, you are at their mercy. Kinda like...."Pay me now....or pay me later".
I'd do it myself!!! Learn about your vehicle...plugs/wires are easy.
My son worked for Midas, and basically they were told to stick it to the college students. Check out the shop for ASE mechanics which might be a plus. If every stall has an oil can each of motor oil ATF and hydraulic fluid, I would move on for sure. Those 4.6 plugs are hard to reach, but do-it-yourself able.
Around 15 years ago, I bought a universal cat converter for my daughter's pinto and needed an adapter to make it fit. I went to Midas and they said they had the adapter but would not sell it to me. I drove to another muffler shop and bought one and I have not been inside a Midas shop since.
