Manx buggy build

My friend wants to build a Manx, but he says he needs an old VW chassis. I think it would be easier to build a tube frame and hang brand new suspension parts of of it instead of trying to find a chassis here in Hawai'i. I myself would forget about using 40 year old suspension parts.
His problem with this is getting the Manx registered and getting a VIN for it.
I am sure if he found a chassis, it would not have the paper work either. His main concern is having a VIN(original) on the VW chassis.
Is there away to register the Manx as a reconsructed/salvage instead of a new build to avoid EPA regulations.
I know each state has different laws, but has anybody got an old, old project registered and back on the road?

Usually you can get a title for a car through various services for $200 or so. I think they run it through a state that doesn't require a title on older cars, so they can get it 'back in the system'. Most dune buggies require you to shorten the v-dub chassis (14" was most common), and it will be hard to find an old chassis that's still solid enough to be safe. A tube chassis would be great; I don't know about registration, tho.

It has been a few years since I drove a VW bug, but, I don't remember even seeing a VIN# on them. Where they required back then?

In NH, if you register it as a "hot rod" and it looks like an early 20-50s vehicle, even if it is all new with fiberglass panels you can. It just has to have a windshield and working lamps. What you should do is study your local laws, maybe build it as a "hot rod". Then once you have a VIN and registration, strip it and change it.

he said that the VIN was somewhere on the "floorpan". There was a plate that could be "cut off" and moved to another vehicle. That is why some VWs have this area missing.
It is harder to find bugs these days, they are rare finds.

that's what my friend was talking about. some creative people remove that section to place on another vehicle.
johntucker09,
Did you have your manx long?
Are you going to do a complete resto, or just mech. repairs?

I want to talk my friend into building a tube frame. I do not think he can get a VW chassis worth building on. I know it can be registered in other ways.

It would be nicer if he could locate the Manx he used to have, he said it was one of the first that were ever sold. I think he said be got the kit for about
350.00? back then.

did Monster Garage build one too?

i've got some work to do on the base, as you can tell from the top pic its got a few holes, i've actually thought about putting a tubular frame or maybe even a frame off of a ranger, but I think i'll stick with the VW base, and I have a boatload of parts for 1200 and 1600cc motors...we had it running and looking good back about 5 years ago, but we blew a hole in the block and its sat ever since...so I am gonna take it upon myself to rebuild it, and I want it to be street legal...

Thanks John, I can see why I never saw one.
